Staffing costs can easily spiral out of control if not carefully controlled. Labor cost are generally the largest component of an operating budget for a senior housing community and can range up to fifty-percent of all expenses. Beacon utilizes a labor tracking system to monitor and keep these costs manageable. The caregiver and dietary schedules at each property are monitored daily with timely alerts sent to the responsible parties and to Beacon should the budgeted hours be exceeded. Beacon incorporates care and risk management systems to efficiently monitor and effectively manage resident assessments and related care services. Assisted Living and Alzheimer’s residents are initially assessed upon entry to the community and on each subsequent quarter. A customized service plan is then prepared for each of these residents. In addition, most resident apartments are equipped with an emergency call system. The response time of each call is monitored daily with alerts received by the responsible parties and Beacon should it exceed the established benchmark. Employee and resident/family satisfaction surveys are routinely performed to monitor the quality of services and support provided by Beacon. We believe strong relationships are the key to success. These surveys help Beacon to establish goals and provide directions to make emotional deposits to build such relationships. All of the above are web-based, real-time software systems that are monitored and compared to industry benchmarks to help manage their efficiencies and affectedness. These systems help Beacon and our staff to be proactive and accept responsibility and ownership of critical issues in our communities. We quickly analyze the situation with a quality assurance checklist, determine the issues involved, and immediately form a plan to execute. Because this sometimes involves several changes in a short period of time, it can be unsettling to some residents and employees. Therefore, Beacon will diligently provide open and honest communication of our goals and planned changes to all parties involved, including residents and their families, staff, vendors and regulators.
